Cleveland Announces Starting QB Will Be Determined by Whoever Finds the Playbook First
Team says “leadership, preparation and basic organizational skills” will all be evaluated during search.
BEREA, OH — The Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday that their starting quarterback for Week 1 will be determined by whichever player finds the playbook first, a decision the team described as “a fair, merit-based process.”
Head coach said the playbook, which was last seen sometime during the 2024 season, has been misplaced within the team’s facility and will not be retrieved or reprinted in advance of Sunday’s game.
“Quarterback is a performance-based position,” Coach told reporters. “If you can find the playbook, you probably understand the offense better than anyone else right now.”
The competition is expected to include Deshaun, Shedeur, and any other quarterback on the roster who is willing to look in filing cabinets, equipment trunks, or the break room refrigerator.
According to team sources, the playbook could be anywhere in the building, including:
- A helmet on the practice field
- The defensive meeting room
- A box labeled “Special Teams (Maybe)”
- Coaches’s office
- Somewhere in the Dawg Pound
- Still in the envelope from 2024
General Manager said the search is part of a larger effort to build “accountability, resourcefulness and situational awareness” within the quarterback room.
“Look, it’s a simple standard,” Coach added. “If you can’t find the playbook, how are you going to find an open receiver?”
